Just a reminder that all of us who are discontented can change things around through the Board elections. They are mailing ballots soon and we are all eligible to vote from July through August. Candidate Biographies are in May's New York Nurse and online. Choose your candidates wisely! We need to get the power back to the People!

Hi Brian and welcome to the board. First let me say how important participating in the election process is for all members. Balloting is currently underway and the results are to be announced at the October convention. I would encourage all members to use the paper ballot and avoid the on-line system. If you did not receive the paper ballot contact the union- there is still time . Also, let us know if you did not receive one. NY Nurses United is campaigning in the election. We are not using this board, which is linked to our website, to do any campaigning, however. Let me explain why... The May edition of NYSNA's newsletter ran our article in the RN Talk column. This was part of the settlement agreement for the lawsuit, which you may have heard about. The article gave our web site address. NYSNA's May publication was also the kick-off for the election and contained the candidate information. It might be unlawful (or unethical) for us to campaign on our website as the as the article mentioning it was published so close to the start of elections. If we did any campaigning on our site or on this board, it could be seen as using the union's resources in an election campaign. You might think this is somewhat of a stretch, but we believe very strongly in following the letter and intent of the law. We wish our union would be more diligent in this regard. During the last election, the Leading Voices column in the same publication featured one of the candidates who was subsequently elected. Later that year, the cover story featured candidates during the Delegate Assembly election who also won seats. Whether or not you believe these actions were intentional, this behavior does not demonstrate the democratic process our members seek and deserve. It can put the union's status and resources at risk, which is harmful to the membership. Through the work of our caucus, we have been able to make some improvements in our union's election process, but more work is needed. Affecting change to achieve a more democratic system can be difficult, especially when met with much resistance and counter-campaigning, but we are willing to go the distance.
